A YERSIN INVESTMENT AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT JOINT STOCK COMPANY is named after a great Swiss-French physician, bacteriologist and explorer Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943). He was the founder and first Director of the Indochina School of Medicine and Pharmacy, affiliated to Indochina University (the predecessor of Hanoi National University today).

He lived and died in Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa. During his 50 years living in Vietnam, he has dedicated and contributed more than 55 scientific research works which brought many great achievements such as the discovery of the bacterium responsible for plague, the cause and treatment, helping humanity avoid the disaster of “Black Death”; as well as many agricultural studies that help Vietnam develop rubber, coffee and quinoa plants to treat malaria.

He was the founder and first Director of the Pasteur Institute Nha Trang (1895); a place for drug preparation, training of medical personnel, research on malaria, bacteria, parasites that cause diseases for humans, animals and medicinal herbs and is the first facility to lay the foundation for the veterinary industry in Vietnam. At the same time, he was also the one who discovered the Cao Lam Vien plateau, which is the premise of today’s Da Lat city.

For his great contributions to humanity in general and Vietnam in particular, he was honored with the Medal of “Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur”, the highest honor of the French State and was honored as an Honorary Citizen of Vietnam. He became a legend in the hearts of the Vietnamese people and was fondly called as “Uncle Five”
